boycott Caliente Cab Company

If you read this, please don't patronize NYC's West Village Caliente Cab Company. Read the NYTimes article describing how the restaurant "discriminat[ed] against Ms. [Khadijah] Farmer because her appearance did not comply with society’s norms concerning gender identity."

The Patriot Act

I came across this NY Times article on a decision by an Oregon Federal Judge ruling that parts of the Patriot Act are unconsitutional. The most horrific part of the Patriot Act is that, under the guise of seeking out foreign intelligence, law enforcement officials have the right to circumvent the Fourth Amendment requirement of probable cause for federal search and surveillance if the Executive Branch deems it appropriate. I have very little faith that the Executive Branch, as it stands today, has the objective ability to make that distinction without a political undertone. The judicial system, although hardly a-political, should serve more than adequately in determining whether probable cause exists to warrant the necessity of searches and surveillance operations, regardless of the circumstances of the case.

A quick review of the Fourth Amendment of the US Constitution:
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

another reason to look forward to fall

Ever since finishing school in 2004, Fall has become my favorite season. No classes to worry about, no moving into dorm rooms (although I got to live in a house in grad school), and little change in my day to day life. And DC summers are hot. Really, really hot. In mid-August, when I can't walk the block from my office to the metro without breaking a sweat, I crave the fall with the pleasant days and the cool nights, sleeping with the windows open and a comfortable walk to the metro. So my plan for this coming fall is to start jogging at lunch time. My office is only a few blocks from Rock Creek Park and my current plan is to explore the Capital Crescent Trail, well at least that part of it that is within a few miles of my office.

On an aside, S and I saw The Bourne Ultimatum this past weekend (perfect hot weather activity) and it is as good as the first two....

an artist in the family

To follow my sister's example, thought I'd give a quick shout out to my cousin, Katie. She is a New England/New York based photographer. Her stuff is both dramatic and provocative - still lifes that capture the essence of reality.

150 Lesbian Gangs in the DC Metro area alone?

Somehow I don't think that's an accurate assessment.

The Oh-Really Factor illustrates the absurdity of this statement. Take a guess as to which political commentator not only suggested this might be true but brought an "expert" in to "prove" this statement's validity...

Jolm's fun run was NOT fun

S and I got to the gym yesterday expecting an hour of lifting and calisthenics per the usual. Instead, we found ourselves on an hour long fun run. Sounds pretty terrible, right? It was. The gym (Simply Fit) is at 7th between P and Q NW and we got hooked up with these small group personal trainings through a Furies teammate. Because of this, we pay a significantly discounted rate thus making it affordable for us poor non-profit and government employees. Anyway, back to the fun run. It went as follows....

Run from gym to 7th and Indiana. 1.1 miles. Jolm is fast. S and I are not but we kept up pretty well (it was mostly downhill). It was "the chase Jolm run" for us, dodging rush hour traffic in Gallery Place.

At 7th and Indiana we stopped for some calisthenic fun. 10 bench jumps.

Next, run to edge of mall. Heading widthwise across the mall, first third was lunge walking. Second third was lunge walk with a squat after every step. Final third, was lunge walk with a squat jump for height after each step. Total of 0.4 miles.

This brought us to 7th and Independence and more running. We ran along Independence to 12th St. 0.3 miles.

We then headed across the mall and started back up the hill we had previously run down. It was much slower heading back up. One block, the block with the steepest gradient, was full speed. It was a slow full speed. We were tired. We made it back up to 12th and P NW. Total of 1.5 miles.

The final leg. 12th and P to 7th and P NW and the sanctuary of the air conditioned gym. 0.3 miles.

We survived. 3.6 miles of FUN. Total time ~60 minutes. Thank god today is a holiday and we are taking it slow and easy. Law and Order marathon here we come...

it's all about me

Is it bad that I set this up simply to fill the screw tag survey out? That tagging probably won't happen until I have those details figured out but my house is getting internet tomorrow!! woohoo!!

Here it is for now:

1. I have red hair although a few white strands are coming in.

2. I am an omnivore.

3. I drive an aging honda civic with nearly 150,000 miles.

4. I hate wearing skirts.

5. I play a lot of sports... this weeks schedule. Monday - Ultimate Frisbee, Tuesday - Jolm's workout and Ice Hockey, Wednesday - 7s rugby, Thursday - Jolm's workout, Friday -off, Saturday - 7s rugby, Sunday - tbd...

6. I'm not a very good cook but I am a great dishwasher. The domestic duties at my house are parcelled out to reflect the respected skill sets.

7. I like cool summers and I love the winter especially if there's lots of snow.
